Ateneo, La Salle Team Up for Truth’s Sake
MANILA, Philippines -- The Ateneo de Manila University and the De La Salle University, bitter rivals on the basketball court, have set aside their differences as the two elite Catholic institutions come together Sunday to offer Mass and support for the Senate’s star witness, Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada Jr., and his family. Bro. Armin Luistro, De La Salle president, said at least 2,000 people are expected to attend the 10-a.m. Mass at the La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) on Ortigas Avenue. Fr. Manoling Francisco of the Ateneo Jesuits will officiate at the Mass, which will also feature a choir from the Ateneo. Francisco, who is a musician, will be leading the homily and the choir, Luistro said... Carmen, Lozada’s sister, said that everyone is invited to join. “This Mass is for truth. This will be a classless crowd. This is for all Filipinos looking for truth,” she said. The LSGH became a sanctuary for Lozada and his family after his ordeal last Feb. 5 when he claimed to have been seized by military men on his return from Hong Kong... After the alleged kidnapping, Lozada became the Senate’s star witness, testifying that former Comelec Chair Benjamin Abalos Sr. had caused the alleged overprice by allegedly demanding a kickback of $130 million. Lozada also implicated President Macapagal-Arroyo’s husband, Jose Miguel Arroyo, in the deal, claiming Abalos was in consultation with Mike Arroyo on the project. Lozada corroborated the testimony of another Senate witness, businessman Jose “Joey” De Venecia III, who claimed that Abalos, the Arroyos, and other officials were involved in the aborted deal. The Mass for the Lozadas was preceded by an indignation rally last Friday against government corruption which drew an estimated 10,000 people from militant groups, civil society organizations and religious communities... Nuns from various religious orders have been asked to help in the security preparations and crowd control. “At this time, we cannot trust anyone. We asked the sisters to come early and help us,” Luistro said. Fr. Javy Alpasa of the Ateneo-based Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan confirmed that the group will be participating, as will other Ateneo-based groups like Watch and Pray and the Ateneo Human Rights Center. Alpasa said the Ateneo community will also be offering Mass at the school’s Katipunan campus in the afternoon as part of Ateneo’s campaign to promote truth and accountability in government... OUR
JOURNEY The Ateneo Blue Eagles and the De La Salle Green Archers agreed to tone down their bright and shining colors and highlight a common background of white to bring forth the greater light of truth!
Jun Lozada’s sister pronounced a more popular view : it
is the people's mass -
“This Mass is for truth. This will be a classless crowd.
This is for all Filipinos looking for truth,”
Even the gathering of sinners who have decided to forsake all lies to be enlightened by the truth shall be honored and declared sacred by the presence of the Lord. Then truth in all its radiance shall make us free and all things around us truly beautiful. And this nation shall once again declare the splendor and glory of the Lord!
